A coal power station without the coal! How 'WIN-WIN' solutions could save an industry.
Coal fired power stations are being retired in record numbers all over the world as we move towards more sustainable energy. But the huge turbines in those facilities provide essential inertia to maintain grid frequency, so losing them is a problem. Wouldn't it be great if we could get rid of the coal and carbon dioxide emissions but keep everything else? Well, now we can...

High voltage electrons from Morocco to the UK. The blueprint for a global 'internet of energy'?
Переглядів 60 тис.День тому
Electrifying everything with renewable technologies like solar PV, wind turbines and battery energy storage is a 'holy grail' that energy transition naysayers tell us is an impossible dream. In 2021, an ambitious UK start-up called Xlinks set out to prove that theory wrong, embarking upon a multi-billion dollar project to install 7.5GW of solar capacity, 3.5GW of wind capacity and 22.5GWh of ba...

Sodium-ion batteries in the USA. Beating China at their own game!
Переглядів 459 тис.Місяць тому
China has cornered the market in green energy transition technologies in recent years, and very effectively gained control of raw material supply chains so any other country has to go through them to get things done. There is one notable exception though. Sodium. It's so ubiquitous that even China can't monopolise it as a commodity. And that means European and US battery makers have spotted a c...

As renewable energy developers struggle with the almost impenetrable complexity of regulatory and permitting bureaucracy that can add more than a decade to the timeline of a new installation, clever boffins have been quietly revolutionising the materials used to make the wires that run between the pylons that take electrons from where they're generated to where they're needed. The Lithium Ion crown has slipped because it is not the answer for electric powered vehicles that can fill the range of applications that ICE vehicle do. We are faced at present with accepting vehicles that are limited in their use or continuing to drive vehicles that use fossil fuel. Outside of the BEV sphere there has been a dramatic increase in waste collection fires here in Australia because of the higher volume of Li-ion batteries being thrown in domestic garbage. The insurance industry is getting more and more concerned about the fire risks with batteries in general and this is now affecting homeowners wanting to add battery storage to their rooftop solar. If ever the silver bullet of solid state batteries was needed it is now and not in five or ten ears.

This is so related too what has just been announced by the main opposition party in australia as they want to go full nuclear and put australia in debt for the next 100 years to further their political control ! They want to replace all the coal fired furnaces with nuclear big and small modules and just plug them into the network at the retired power stations utilising the steam turbines in the same manner . This is the perfect retort to this dangerous madman Dutton and his lackeys !

I’ve been saying for years to set up Sodium ion battery mfr plant near a desalination plant. Desalination is a growing need for getting drinking water out of the oceans. Problem is the sodium gets dumped back in thr ocean and becomes to high in sodium killing the eco system. This is a win win option. Because of the inherent problems with sodium vs lithium batteries, the use of sodium for stationary batteries is ideal.

At 7:51 we see a study of climate change effects on world food trade networks for the years 2070 to 2099. Do these nerds actually think that they can predict anything 45 to 75 years in advance? There couldn't be much of a near term crises coming if world trade networks will still be operating 75 years from now. One thing I know for sure is that a food crisis 75 years from now is not going to kill me.

Thank you. In Australia, the opposition has just announced that if they get elected, they'll build seven reactors, the first to be completed by 2035. In the meantime, I understand that they support the ongoing use of gas and coal. They actively campaign against wind and solar. The latest popular phrase is "loss of amenity." Farmers complain that onshore wind farms will spoil their view and residents in some coastal towns are worried that turbines located 20km offshore will also spoil their view.

I think this is very good news for a fast change of energy system mainly in China and India. My solution for the climate crisis is something that I call Solar Power Water Management (SPWM). It is based on pump water with solar power up to high altitudes (100-5000 meter) and then use water power stations that bring the water down to the level where food production is possible. Water is spread over a large area. When there is enough rain is the pipe that pump up the water used in revers for power production. Solar power is of cause used direct daytime.
